MADDEN 05 - 2004 SEASON

2004 Seattle Seahawks

Seahawk Season-In-Review

SEATTLE - In their 30th anniversary season since beginning play in the National Football League, the Seahawks donned the traditional silver helmets and pants, and classic blue jerseys. The team would put together a magical campaign winning 18 out of 19 games, including the season defining, amazing comeback from a 27-0 deficit at home to defeat the Rams 37-30.

The Seahawks opened the 2004 campaign by reeling off 13 consecutive victories and coming up one game short of tying the best start ever in NFL regular season history by the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. The Seahawks absolutely dusted their NFC West competition this season, winning it by an amazing TEN games, with the Cards (5-11), Rams (4-12), and 49ers (3-13) all registering disappointing, subpar seasons.

While the `72 Dolphins managed to pop the champagne corks one more time as the only team to complete a season undefeated, on January 30th, the Seahawks finally broke through and raised the Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, triumphing 31-17 over the defending champion Patriots, and denying them a repeat championship.

The season was filled with career performances and post-season awards for the Seahawks, as ten players were named to represent the NFC in Honolulu at the Pro Bowl, and Shaun Alexander was named league MVP and the NFC Offensive Player of the Year for his single season rushing record shattering 2497 rushing yards.

Coach Mike Holmgren added a second championship ring to his collection, and his first since the Packers' triumph in 1996. In his twentieth and final NFL campaign, the greatest receiver of all-time Jerry Rice, logged another Pro Bowl season, and was on his fourth Super Bowl championship team.

Around the league, there were three dominant teams in NFC, as the Packers (14-2), the Eagles (13-3), and the Seahawks (15-1), all put together absolutely superlative seasons, with each winning more than 13 games.

The division winners in the AFC were surprises as the once down Browns (9-7) and Chargers (10-6), and the rebounding Titans (13-3) joined the Patriots (11-5) as division winners. Also notable was the second place finish of the Texans (10-6), which was good enough for their first ever franchise playoff bid.

Also, there was a very exciting two-man rushing race to beat Eric Dickerson's 20 year old single season rushing record as Jamal Lewis of the Ravens and Shaun Alexander both managed to break Dickerson's record, with performances of 2121 and 2497 yards, respectively.
