Message from the Coach

I got an email from the athletic department today, with a message from the coach

------

Aloha .............................

Thank you for supporting our outstanding student-athletes during our 12-0 regular season, Western Athletic Conference Championship, and our first-ever appearance in a Bowl Championship Series game, the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl. These young men worked tirelessly during the course of the 2007 campaign in order to represent the entire state of Hawai`i in first-class fashion and I certainly could not be more proud of them.

It was my great honor to be associated with such a quality group of coaches and players. They demonstrated teamwork, sacrifice, grit, determination, unselfishness, humility, and an unrelenting commitment to success. Meanwhile, they were superior individuals off the field and represented Hawai`i with class, dignity, and honor.

I want to extend a special mahalo to the fans of Hawai`i. You were there for us during the course of the season and traveled with us in great numbers to New Orleans, making incredible personal sacrifices. That really touched our hearts in ways that can never be accurately communicated. The level of energy, excitement, and passion you demonstrated truly helped make this a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Mahalo,

June Jones
Head Coach

-------

Mahalo to you, Coach.

It is what it is.

When the best part of a team goes against the worst part of yours, domination usually occurs on the football field. Last night was no exception.

That being said, it was a great ride this season. I never thought that UH would go undefeated in a regular season schedule, much less go to a BCS bowl in my lifetime.

Looking back as someone who had season tickets for the 0-12 season in 1998, the team has come a long, LONG way back, not only to respectability, but to make an appearance at that elusive "next level" of college football. The level for teams with much larger budgets and where better athletes 1-105 play.

I'm not sure that UH can be at the "next level" consistently, given so many constraints that the football program faces. But, for at least one night, it was my team, our team, on the national stage in the big game. And that is pretty sweet.

Kudos and thanks to the team this year and the coaching staff. Great job all around.

2007 Division Champs

I paused a bit today to research how successful my favorite pro football team has been in the 30 years now that I have been following them. Frankly, it's an embarrassment of riches.

I didn't compare with other teams, but I do feel fortunate to be a fan of the team. I don't think that they will do much in the playoffs this year, but then again, I thought the same in 2005, the most recent SB championship

What I learned (1977-2007)
18 playoff seasons
14 division titles
4 AFC championships
3 Super Bowl championships
287 Regular season wins (incl. 2007 to date)

All in all, I feel very lucky as well to be a Black&Gold fan.

Heisman Finalist ... Finally

A handful of years after TC was touted as a finalist.

One year after Colt arguably has the best season ever as a college QB statistically of 63 TDs -- on a 3 loss team. DOES NOT GET INVITED.

Colt goes to the apple in decay as a Heisman finalist this year, with great stats and riding an undefeated season

If that jump passing ass from FL wins the Heisman with his "best season ever as a college QB statistically of 51 TDs" and on a 3 loss team, I will puke then swear repeatedly.

Andy's back

Great news this morning that Andy Pettitte has decided against retirement and will pitch one more year in a Bronx. My personal feelings are that given his strong feelings for his family in Houston and possible retirement, it feels like a bonus to get Andy Pettitte back in the Bronx for one more year.

My guess is that this just turned the Santana trade talks on their ear. A lot of the urgency for the deal on New York's part may now be gone.

UH in BCS?

The answer is: YES!

One of the long-time dreams of the program is finally realized.
UH is in a big payday, BCS bowl.

UH finished the season with a #10 final BCS ranking, which automatically qualified the team for BCS bowl selection. The Sugar Bowl game selected Hawaii to play against BCS ranked #5 Georgia to play in New Orleans on New Years Day 2008.

BELIEVE.

UH 35 Washington 28

UH. 12-0. Unbelievable!!!!

Amazing comeback victory, erasing two 21 point deficits to go ahead for the win in the 4th Q, with just seconds remaining.

Another stellar performance by Colt, but the player of the game was Jason Rivers.
I think "Big Game" is too small a nickname for the WR who always gives big time, clutch performances in important games.

I would never have imagined that in my lifetime, UH would not only break the TOP10 in any national poll, but be undefeated in a full season. Speechless, unbelievable, priceless -- and probably once in a lifetime.

WAC Champs

Hawaii 39 Boise 27

For the first time, UH has won the WAC conference football conference outright.
Third conference championship since 1992.

Update: 11/25:
UH is now ranked #12 in the BCS standings, which is the required ranking to receive an automatic bid to a BCS bowl.

Some common sense

Is necessary ... required?

Real short. So if the league commissioner finds that the FlyingElvises cheated by stealing signals -- shouldn't the FlyingElvi just be required to forfeit the game to the AirTransporters of Jersey?

I don't get where all this, let's penalize them by withholding draft picks comes from -- that's so off-the-wall, bizarre to me. If you cheated in the game, take away the game. It's a forfeit. Period. Nothing is more punitive than taking away wins, nip this in the bud.

Where's the VP of common sense when you need them?

Just plain grouchy

Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand how certain fan-related sports blogs can be so ridiculously negative, yet receive high praise as some kind of great source of information for certain sports teams

End of an era ...

Or, when the The Association still mattered ... that is, from a blood and guts perspective ... hardcore basketball ... not talking beautiful game necessarily ... but blood and guts effort, intense rivalries, none of this current day superstar driven crud ... teams, personalities ... wait, did I say that? ... yes, personalities within the team concept. And, of course, good old fashioned hate -- note, not 'dislike' ... HATE

Nice article in the DetroitFreePress setting up this round of playoffs between the NuBulls and the RePistons ... Bulls - Pistons: 88-91, the last of the old school team-based rivalries. And I'm not even a fan of either team ... I loved it for what it was, an old fashioned beat down -- a battle to see who wanted it more.

Funny, although I enjoy the renaissance of the fun-n-gun Suns, Mavs, GSW ala the late 70s and 80s when I started watching. I just don't get that feeling that anyone really cares that deeply anymore, it's that annoying we play hard only in the last 5 minutes of the game stuff, all the hugging and texting and hanging out.

Ehhh, I'm probably just getting all old and nostalgic, but where are the rivalries that this league was revived on and thrived on? ... Bullets-Spurs; Showtime Lakers v. Celtics; Pistons - Celtics; Bulls- Pistons; Knicks - Bulls ... Knicks - Heat seemed promising a handful of years ago, but 33 of the Garden was on his last wheels. Can't think of any since then, then again less than 5 in the Association had their own signature shoes at that time, either

Really enjoyed this read ... life's definitely different now ... check it here.

Pardon my rant

Wow, my first athletic commentary in freaking years. And although there are many obvious targets so far ... including H. Failure's fball sched and bball coach debacle, the interlocking NYY's annoying losses early this season, etc.

I want to talk LAL bball. In particular, the playoff ouster last year and the very mediocre performance so far this year.

Good Spectacles and Bad Spectacles

I can understand the hype behind our local female prodigy. I can appreciate that many people would really like her to do well, and to some degree, I share that sentiment.

Her prodigious talent is really a tremendous thing, and people all over the world would love to see her play -- and are fascinated by the spectacle of a late-mid teens golfer doing well against her female competition.

I think the current issue concerning her is that no one is satisfied with just appreciating that she is good -- in fact, awesome in terms of all who have come before and now play -- there are always other questions that will tear at what she is trying to accomplish

The improbable run

Although the Blueshirts got swept out of the playoffs, it really was a surprising season where the NYR were in first place for much of the season ... and of course, returned to the playoffs for the first time in nine years

Famous Last Words

I was thinking that I would write my impressions of each Interlocking NY game this season that I watch -- after all, I have the MLBtv -- LOL, we'll see how much dedication I have to this

10:30 HST -- Baseball is a funny game. I mean, here we have the acclaimed best closer in baseball just not able to close out the Sawx two games in a row

And even though, he didn't have his best stuff, there was a potential inning ending, game saving ground ball to third -- that A-Rod couldn't get a grip on to either throw home or start an inning ending DP -- the roof caved in after that, and the 3-2 lead turned into an eventual 7-3 loss

Well, one series in the book, Yanks 2-1 over the Red Stockings -- hopefully, Terry Francona the Sawx manager is doing ok after being checked into the hospital -- and hopefully the magic comes back to the bats after two days of limited hitting -- and of course, hopefully 42 finds his mojo again

April 5, 2005

Really enjoying

And no, you would think that the thing that I am enjoying is the Tar Heels victory in the NC game last night -- yeah that was good, too -- actually the whole tournament was really good this year -- didn't pay much attention to national college basketball this past season, but the tourney, especially the regional rounds, and the finals last night were really good

---

I am really enjoying baseball, I can't really remember when I felt so excited about baseball -- no, not UH baseball -- get rid of the coach, I suppose is what I should say, LOL not -- although we have been to a few games this year --

I'm really excited about MLB -- for some reason, I don't really give a mud about the whole steroid thing -- to me that's baseball getting caught with their pants down again, so they should fix it, not that I'm holding my breath or anything

Saw the interlocking NY take out the Sawx on Sunday night -- yesterday got to see a lot of the Mets-Reds game -- this morning I saw game 2 in the Bronx between the Sawx and the Yanks, that was a great game -- I thought Mariano was gonna choke it up after giving up a solo shot by Varitek to tie the game 3 UP in the 9th -- Jeter came up in the bottom and hit a foul ball that was almost caught by Millar, next pitch opp field walk-off

I love this game, and I really love MLB.TV -- awesome

On a side note, I think this whole LA Angels of Anaheim thing is GD ridiculous -- now, when they put up acronyms the Dodgers are LAD, and the Angels are LAA -- umm, I'm not liking the LAD/LAA crap -- well back to Giants-Dodgers ...

Could it be?

I am growing out of my love for sports -- or are certain sports just getting super dull

For the second time in 10 years, I have decided to boycott my favorite pro ball team -- and for that matter the Association -- I cannot imagine how it is that they have managed to dumb and dull down one of the literally more action packed and exciting spectator games

This does not mean that I will somehow switch teams and allegiances -- it just means that at best, I will turn my somewhat lukewarm interest on during the playoffs and enjoy the last remaining years of the Diesel, even if he is in Miami (much like I enjoyed the last remaining years of MJ in the 2nd City)

---

As a matter that I think is kind of lame but ironic -- I was playing some video game football as that team with the Pacific Northwestern themed Indian seabird on the helmet -- and it's funny because as talented as that team is -- it can't get it's head out of it's ass even in the world of cybersportgaming LOL -- God Bless You Fierce (Frustrating) Seabird fans

January 23, 2005

It's not personal

No, this isn't the tagline of some new relationship book about how this person is just not that into someone

This is a lesson I learned from observing Red Sox fans and Eagles fans -- and in being a Steeler fan over the past 25 years

I'm not on the field, I'm not on the team, I don't know why teams lose --

But I do know something, it's not personal

At the end of the day, it's entertainment -- and yeah, I guess some people might say that some fans are masochistic in their faith in teams that haven't won championships in years and years and years

But at the end of the day, it's not personal -- your team wins, great -- your team loses, don't jump off the bandwagon -- but keep it in perspective, your life didn't change one iota

This is not critical to your life -- just because your team won, it doesn't make you part of the team -- if your team lost, you're still not part of the team -- and obviously you shouldn't be a jackass win or lose -- because you're a fan, you're not part of the team -- I think it is a pound more than foolish to think that your life or emotions can be so utterly affected by the result of a sporting contest thousands of miles away

Enjoy the hell out of it, or hate the hell out of it -- at the end of the day, it really shouldn't affect your daily life beyond the few hours of entertainment it provided

I know some people feel fooled and cheated -- and like "ooh made you look" -- don't get bitter or cynical over entertainment -- it's something that's supposed to make life a little better

So after you jumped on and off a bandwagon -- or celebrated/sulked like some life changing event happened -- at the end of the day, your life didn't really change, now did it?

And, I know that if you wanted to, you could live a life not interested one iota in sports -- hell, I know plenty of people who live that life

January 15, 2005

Scratching my head

No, it's not time for Denorex

I have just been thrown under the bus so many times watching my team basically do everything in its power to literally LOSE a game

See, the thing about the Cowher era has been this -- mostly great regular seasons, no complaints there -- several division titles in the era of parity -- but in the playoffs is when it gets damn interesting for the fans of the BnG

So when I see a punt return for a TD, I think about 2001 AFC Choke against NE -- When I see balls thrown directly to players on the other team, I think Larry Brown and the Meltdown in the Desert in SB30 -- when I see a great first quarter and then a team hang around and hang around, I think 17-13 against the Chargers

The Steelers don't win games like today -- no, not during the Cowher era -- in the Cowher era, you see shit that almost make you think the team is cursed like the Red Sox (were)

Today DOINK and WIDE LEFT ... could this be the year? ... I think back to Nedney's dramatic acting skills in 2002, miss one, then get a second chance to throw the Steelers under the bus

Things like this don't happen ... I await tomorrow to see who will throw us under the bus next week

I mean, it couldn't happen -- the oddest things seem to happen at playoff games at home for my team

January 4, 2005

Wow

So much for the hype ...

Total shellacking by USC -- congratulations to the coaches, the team, and the rest of FIGHT ON nation

----
On a separate note, who is setting up these halftime extravaganzas that go on and on -- and are lame as hell

I think I heard boos during Ashley Simpson's performance, of course that could have been just me

November 19, 2004

I can't believe it

I have listened all season to pundits and coaches say that fans shouldn't boo or curse out players -- and that there is nothing wrong with vigorously cheering for your team

I have heard about how people at our local home team's stadium feel uncomfortable because people get drunk, pick fights, etc.

Now, I have seen the apocalypse of fan/athlete interactions in the ESPN Friday night Detroit-Indiana game -- and I go, why should we blame only the players -- if some of those tweeker fans have season tickets revoke em -- and charge them with the criminal acts that they committed -- and if you're gonna be serious about player conduct, I want to see people get kicked out of the league for this

Otherwise, this does nothing for me to solve the out of control fan and player problem in all spectator sports -- and it sucks because a few people always fuck it up for everyone else

November 7, 2004

At the turn

At the midseason point, it is very surprising that my beloved Steelers are 7-1 -- which is one victory more than the total last season -- and dos, that the Steelers have just dominated and beaten up the widely thought of best two teams in both conferences -- NE and Philly

Still half a season to play, but next two weeks should show how well this team plays on the road against the division -- but at least at the halfway point, where there are no titles given out, the Steelers are the best team in the NFL

On a lighter note, I discovered a really cool Triumph the Insult Comic Dog clip while watching the Jon Stewart appearance on CNN Crossfire --

You won't believe this until you see it: Here's a few words of description

HE INTERVIEWS LINDA LINGLE

I saw it up on the official NBC site of Conan's Late Night show -- and also on www.ifilm.com

October 20, 2004

Evident all year

Selective amnesia hit the minds of baseball and media pundits this week -- the very same pundits that criticized the Bombers all year long about the thin pitching staff, the lack of a matchup lefty from the bullpen, the burned out late innings fire crew, oh yeah, and the inconsistent offense --

Well, there's a funny thing about baseball -- there are the baseball gods, and ultimately the game doesn't lie -- you can do the equivalent of winning with mirrors all year, but IN THE END -- the game will catch up with you

And contrary to the graphics on Fox (can't they get anything right?) -- this was NOT one of the greatest upsets of all time -- it's hard to call a 35-35 series over the past three years, leading up to G7 -- YANKEE DOMINANCE

Give Boston the credit for staying the course and edging out the Yankees 4-3 -- Baseball is a funny game that way -- the best teams often only win 3 of 5 games no matter what the quality of competition is -- for Boston to win four straight, that is truly outstanding -- just as the Yanks winning the first three --

All it points to is that now 36-35 record between the teams -- play it again, and who knows who wins -- but for this year, the Red Sox broke through, they deserve the credit -- If the focus remains on how the Yankees collapsed, it implies that the Bosox either didn't deserve to win or somehow got an assist from the Yankees, and nothing is farther from the truth

Here is what is surprising about this year for this Yankee fan, the Interlocking NY won 101 games -- that's second best in baseball -- they won their 7th consecutive division -- no one on the pitching staff won more than 15 games -- they came FROM BEHIND to win 61 games -- and no one named Wells, Pettite, or Clemens pitched for this team

Although they took out the Twins 3-1 like last year, it was hardly a dominant performance -- but it was a demonstration that the Yanks knew how to win in the postseason --

After taking a 3-0 lead on the Sawx, it looked for all the world that it was enough for the Yanks to know how to win in the postseason --

In the end, the inconsistency that the Yanks showed all season long came back to haunt them -- and Boston finally played to the form that they were showing flashes of at various points in the season

On paper the Red Sox were the better team -- in the end, for 4 nights out of 7, on the field they were the better team -- that's why the WS will be in Fenway for the first time in 18 years

As much as people like to talk about mysticism and curses, the better team won the ALCS this year -- it took them a while to right the GD ship, but they did it -- more power to them

I notice that there is HEAVY emphasis placed by the Sawx fans, management, and team on beating the Yankees -- however, that certainly is not what 1918 is all about -- 1918 is about winning the World Series --

As an Interlocking NY fan, that has been my greatest disappointment of the past four years and two WS appearances -- NO TITLES -- the playoffs are about winning titles, not defeating rivals --

Time will tell whether what happened to the 2003 NYY, which played absolutely FLAT and lost to the Marlins after a grind it out series with the Sawx will happen this time to the Sawx

So was all the chi spent with the victory over NY?
I have this odd suspicion in my gut that it was --

Honestly, I can't give you any rational reasons why the Bosox can't win it all -- the offense is awesome -- they have two top shelf starters, and two starters that have played solid -- the bullpen is coming together at the right time -- and thanks to Uncle Bud S., they have potentially FOUR games at Fenway because the A.L. All-Stars won the All-Star Game

In the final analysis, I think the Bosox just won their "WS" -- that's unfortunate because those NLCS teams look hungry as hell to take home the big trophy, the title, the WS ring -- and that's what it's all about -- we shall see ...

Random thoughts on

... the eve of destruction -- HA

I think back to last year in the 8th inning of the ALCS when the Yanks looked all but sunk -- and was simply amazed by the comeback that tied the game and ultimately lost Grady Little his job -- it really put another one in the column of how the heck do the Yankees keep pulling it out of the fire

This year against the Twins, I had the same feeling -- in the 2001 playoffs, the Yankees abused BH Kim two games in a row late in the game after looking offensively lethargic -- they fell back 0-2 to the A's, only to be energized by the Jeter pitch play

So here we are, only 4 days ago the Yanks had an ironclad grip on the series --
3-0 -- in fact, if you look at it from one standpoint, the Yanks prior to Game 6 had basically completed the first 5 game sweep in ALCS history -- as atypically, the bullpen lost leads in G4 and G5 at Fenway

Today, they got beat down by Curt "Walks with God" Schilling, and the offense was lethargic as hell --

This series has shown a lot of what this year's Bombers are about -- the best record in the AL -- yet can lose game 22-0 -- can beat the crap out of Boston 19-8 -- and lose to KC 26-5 -- pull games out of their ass at Minnesota -- come from behind -- 61 TIMES! -- and then go flat when the clincher is at hand

Las Vegas had Boston as a slight favorite to win the AL pennant -- actually if you look at Series To Win bets -- the most likely scenario was Boston in 6

So here we are on the eve of destruction AGAIN -- ha

Is Boston the same team that took 5 of 6 from the Yanks in the first two series of the season? -- Are they the ones that fell behind 10 1/2 -- Are they everyone's sweethearts that took 20 of 22, and cut the Yanks lead at times to 1 1/2 -- or are they that team that never broke through

Both teams have shown that HOT-COLD tendency this year -- so one year later in the ALCS, here we are again -- almost as if it were written in the stars

For NY, if they win, it is surprising because they took out a team that has many of the features that they had over winning seasons past -- almost like a role reversal -- they have somehow pulled it out again when all the experts (and SL owner guy, not an expert) wonder how the heck is this team winning with the patchwork pitching staff and the overworked bullpen

If they don't win, all you can say is that money doesn't buy championships -- and I think the Boss should be expected to make a lot of moves to deal with the championship drought -- obviously the Yankees need arms -- although adding Carlos Beltran would be incredible

For Boston, if they win, it will be an amazing comeback for a team that has proven resilient this year so far -- but has yet to break through

If Boston doesn't win, damn -- I don't buy the curse stuff -- I think a lot of the non-WS appearances have to do with being in the same division as the Yanks and Orioles who both have had years and years of success in the pre-Wild Card era --

I think all that can be said is that this will be one of those teams that had swagger and power and mass appeal but ultimately fell short of championships -- like the 81 Chargers or even the 98 Vikings in football -- that absolutely loaded Red Wings team a few years back that lost a handful of times in the regular season but didn't win the cup -- the 110+ wins Mariners of a few years back ... the list goes on and on

I think the problem that faces the winner tomorrow is the same as last year, NY emerged from the war but had nothing left for the Marlins -- that is the next question, what will the AL pennant winner have left for Houston or STL?

No matter who you cheer for tomorrow, enjoy the game -- I think that for two straight years now, the ALCS has just been simply amazing

Who could ask for anything more?

Win 3, lose 3 -- much as it has been these past two seasons between the Bombers and the Sawx -- a virtual deadheat of win some and lose some by these two really evenly matched teams

I'm glad because it's good to get people back into being excited about baseball -- once again this year, despite the MANY things baseball gets WRONG, the playoffs have really showed how exciting this game can be -- every pitch counts, every swing of the bat can change fortunes

ICHIRO DID IT

Ichiro broke the single season hits record that had stood for 84 years. In the process, he has also has the most hits over any four season period in MLB history.

It is unfortunate that some pundits have tried to discount his achievement, calling him a "singles hitter" or "slap hitter". As I recall, the object of the game is to get on base by putting it in play or getting put on base -- and then score. Ichiro isn't scoring as many runs this season (probably due to the lineup behind him), but he is hitting .370+ and has the most hits in MLB history in a 162-game season.

The bottom line is this: 259 times he put the ball in play and wasn't thrown out. Just looking at that number is mind-boggling, and it is WHY the record stood for so long until this year.

All things come to an end

I was surprised to hear today that De La Salle (Concord) lost a football game. It's amazing to me because they had piled up a 151 game winning streak in high school football. They travelled nationwide to play other teams. They played a number of high profile schools during the streak ON THE ROAD.

Having seen them play St. Louis High School here, they are the pinnacle of execution on the field, and class. Just an awesome achievement for the Spartans and Coach Ladouceur -- the sustained excellence and character of this team is admirable indeed

One Fan's Rant

It's hot and humid --- so it's hard not to get testy

I have three things to rant about from this one fan's perspective (which in all actuality don't amount to a hill of beans)

Perspective.
It's very hard to maintain perspective over a 162-game season -- as much as I whined and complained last week, the interlocking NY is now on a 6-game winning streak -- and the hated Beantown Dirtdogs, well they got swept by a upstart Texas team that is playing WAYTHEHELL better without the 250M bonus baby -- a long way to go, but at least things seem to be turning around for the pinstripes

Consistency.
I heard a very interesting comment from one of the talking heads last week while watching the playoffs. I can't remember precisely who said it, I think it may have been Doc Rivers, but I'm not sure -- he said that the team that is the most consistent game to game, not flashy, plays like a team, plays good D -- is the (HATED) Spurs.

I think that that is precisely what has made my favorite team so frustrating this year -- yes there are 4 future HOFers -- yes they probably have the most on-paper talent -- but damn it, they are frustrating to watch -- like today for example, a really great 3rd quarter leads to a single digit performance in the 4th -- I can't figure them out, they are killing me -- it's only 1-0 but this one is the one that got away

Getting a Clue.
Ok, in the bigger scheme of things UTEP leaving the WAC really does not shift the polar icecaps or cause the national collegiate athletic landscape to profoundly change -- However, I do have this to say as a UH fan -- WTF has been going on since 1998 -- I have seen 8 teams leave to form the MWC -- leaving a bunch of geographically stretched teams to play and burn enough jetfuel to cause this global warming -- TCU then left and then left another conference to join the MWC -- the UH President talks like he's going to get something done and plan and move forward -- well hey, lookit (yes, not grammatical but I'm pist) -- we're in worse shape than we ever were in a conference of castoffs and wannabes -- how does a team in the middle of the Pacific play league games in RUSTON DAMN LOUISIANA -- and soon (Wherethehellis) Las Cruces and Logan FKN Utah -- the powers that be at UH really need a reality check

I don't claim to know the be all, end all -- but why didn't the WAC go after SDSU and UNLV -- I think the answer has been in front of the remaining WAC members's faces for a really long time -- Mr. Benson needs help -- and UH and the other WAC members need more help because they are following his lead

Damn, it's humid

It sucks

I am not an alarmist but I frankly think it sucks that the Yankees have been owned so far this season by the Red Sox, losing 6 of 7 so far

Hopefully, the interlocking NY can get back into the swing of winning in the upcoming series against the A's

This is embarassing

Ok, by now you have heard the news that A-Rod (THE BEST PLAYER IN THE GAME, no argument here) is the newest member of the Yankees, being traded from Texas for the inconsistent, enigmatic, but supremely talented Alfonso Soriano -- and everyone's favorite term "the player to be named later"

I'm a diehard fan of the interlocking NY -- but even I must say that this is getting pretty ridiculous -- $200M dollar payroll, that should say it all -- actually, the fact that the Yankees have been the highest payroll the past three years (or more?) indicates something to me

Money doesn't win championships -- pitching does

Sure, the Yanks dumped a lot of older pitchers -- but I can't really say that the ones they picked up are a step up or pessimistically are a lateral or side step -- and losing Andy Pettite and Roger probably will negatively affect clubhouse leadership

I'm not a baseball man, only a fan -- but even this fan has to wonder how many games the Bronx Bombers can win 24-23 -- Step aside Murderers Row, this group may set new standards for offensive excellence -- but where's the pitching and D
