Music from Cloverfield

AKA Rob's Party Mix

The party scene in the movie Cloverfield really caught my attention because of the musical choices. Some very familiar, some totally new to us. But overall, an excellent set of 16 songs that I wouldn't mind being turned into a soundtrack CD.

The Playlist
Coconut Records - West Coast
Kings of Leon - Taper Jean Girl
Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
The Blood Arm - Do I Have Your Attention
Scissors For Lefty - Got Your Moments
Parliament - Give Up The Funk

Spoon - The Underdog
Kings of Leon - Pistol Fire
Architecture in Helsinki - Do the Whirlwind
The Black Keys - Grown So Ugly
Bright Eyes - Four Winds
Joan As Policewoman - The Ride

Juno

SD and I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago. Still must say, the theatres in the 2nd city are remarkably crowded some nights -- makes me wonder if there really is nothing to do at night on the westside of our island. But I digress.

Juno - B

After seeing this movie, I came away with a few impressions. Mostly they were about the critical acclaim of this movie. I think most critics are adding to this movie by installing their own perceptions of what this movie was (or maybe I should say adding things that were not there). To us, the movie was good and solid, not great.

Entertaining. Yes, charming at times. Okay, a bit goofy. Very likable.

But we didn't walk away from it stark raving, proclaiming it the best movie of the year; or engaging in discussions about it; or wanting to see it again immediately; or wanting to own it on (you insert the home video format). It is what it is, a coming of age film. Not only of the teenage star of the movie or her best friend. But of some Gen-X good looking, rich 30-somethings as well.

Even though the performances were very good, the movie was still a very simple plot. Teenage pregnancy, what to do, choose what to do, have misgivings, carry through on what to do -- and giggle along the way, and maybe see some of yourself in certain characters. If the performances were not as good, it would be easy to discount this movie as some kind of lower grade, off beat indie film in the vein or flavor of Nap-Dy.

There were times when you just went, okay that was a bit too smart for anyone to say, much less a teenager, much less a middle aged woman. But, they happen so infrequently, they are rather unnoticeable and for the most part, one can't help but to ride along with the pleasant vibe of the film.

And at the end of the day, that is what we thought it was. A sweet film, in many ways. Very pleasant. Didn't leave us wanting to see it 3x+ like some critics. The lead actress (EllenPage) is likely one to watch in the future. Her best friend (MichaelCera) is a modern master of understated, straight man dead pan (plays the same as in Superbad). The supporting roles are solid.

It is a good movie. Rather than recommend it, we would say that if you are interested in seeing it, you probably would enjoy it. Go see it if you wanted to.

Love Adele ...

Lots of buzz for Adele in the UK for 08.
Too bad, no US releases yet. Two release dates this month 1/21 & 1/28, no mention of USA though. Oh well, UToob is my friend this time.

The Aftermath

We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, ... you can go up on a steep hill ... and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.
- Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Not so fast, Fancy Pantsuit!

I think all that talk about inevitability of the fancy pantsuit and electability of the guy with the funny name (aka TheOrator) has just gone out the window.

Wonder what her magic mirror said to her last night ... magic mirrors are fun like that.

Message from the Coach

I got an email from the athletic department today, with a message from the coach

------

Aloha .............................

Thank you for supporting our outstanding student-athletes during our 12-0 regular season, Western Athletic Conference Championship, and our first-ever appearance in a Bowl Championship Series game, the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl. These young men worked tirelessly during the course of the 2007 campaign in order to represent the entire state of Hawai`i in first-class fashion and I certainly could not be more proud of them.

It was my great honor to be associated with such a quality group of coaches and players. They demonstrated teamwork, sacrifice, grit, determination, unselfishness, humility, and an unrelenting commitment to success. Meanwhile, they were superior individuals off the field and represented Hawai`i with class, dignity, and honor.

I want to extend a special mahalo to the fans of Hawai`i. You were there for us during the course of the season and traveled with us in great numbers to New Orleans, making incredible personal sacrifices. That really touched our hearts in ways that can never be accurately communicated. The level of energy, excitement, and passion you demonstrated truly helped make this a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

Mahalo,

June Jones
Head Coach

Mahalo to you, Coach.

It is what it is.

When the best part of a team goes against the worst part of yours, domination usually occurs on the football field. Last night was no exception.

That being said, it was a great ride this season. I never thought that UH would go undefeated in a regular season schedule, much less go to a BCS bowl in my lifetime.

Looking back as someone who had season tickets for the 0-12 season in 1998, the team has come a long, LONG way back, not only to respectability, but to make an appearance at that elusive "next level" of college football. The level for teams with much larger budgets and where better athletes 1-105 play.

I'm not sure that UH can be at the "next level" consistently, given so many constraints that the football program faces. But, for at least one night, it was my team, our team, on the national stage in the big game. And that is pretty sweet.

Kudos and thanks to the team this year and the coaching staff. Great job all around.
