Censorship is Un-American

Tonight, ABC's Nightline is doing something beautiful and courageous.
The entire show will consist of a reading of the names of each soldier
who has fallen in Iraq, while his or her photograph shows on the
screen.

But ABC affiliate stations around the country will be prohibited from
airing the special. That's because they're owned by Sinclair
Broadcasting Group, a company whose executives have given tens of
thousands to Republicans and whose right-wing allies tout it as "the
next Fox."

In a statement released earlier this week, the company said that to
honor the men and women who died in this way would be a political act that is "contrary to the public interest." Censoring images of the fallen serves the right-wing ideologues who pushed the war in Iraq, but it certainly doesn't serve our country to hide those who were killed.

* According to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics,
Sinclair executives gave $136,000 to Republicans and the Bush
administration since 2000. It's clear that their partisan bias is
outweighing their responsibility to the public.

* Sinclair is essentially saying that any public recognition of the
fallen soldiers is a political act against the war in Iraq. That
trivializes the sacrifices these men and women made for us. Honoring
the dead is not a partisan act.

* In a news environment often focused on celebrity and pop culture,
Nightline's willingness to take time out of their usual schedule to
pay tribute to the dead is a great service. Civic-minded journalism
like this should be encouraged, not censored.

Questions and issues

Well I got to talk more with #2 -- actually with the big cheese and her equity partner. All in all, I felt that it went really well -- however, I am not so sure that I will accept a position with them -- have to think about it a GREAT DEAL more

April 26, 2004

It sucks

I am not an alarmist but I frankly think it sucks that the Yankees have been owned so far this season by the Red Sox, losing 6 of 7 so far

Hopefully, the interlocking NY can get back into the swing of winning in the upcoming series against the A's

April 25, 2004

I finally saw it -- Part II

... actually this could have a double meaning -- I finally saw Kill Bill, Vol.1 again, this time with SD yesterday afternoon

It was the first time SD had seen it -- and at the end of it, she kind of said that it didn't live up to all of the hype that her friends had heaped upon it -- I was a bit more relaxed in my viewing

When I saw it at first with E and S, it really kind of blew me away -- all that action, all that homage, all the movement, colors, archetypes, icons, etc. -- I thought it was very excellent, and seeing it again many months later, I conclude that it is still very good and true to its purpose

Last night, in a marathon-like sequence, SD and I went to see Vol. 2 -- and long story short, SD liked V.2 better than V.1 -- I guess because it was paced more to her liking -- I found it interesting at the end of the movie that people were muttering about which one they liked better

Funny, but isn't this all the same movie -- ok, ok, I'm no fun

Some impressions I had:
1. Does it matter how Bill gets killed, so long as that he dies by Beatrix's hands?
2. Does it matter that everyone on Beatrix's list is killed by Beatrix or not? Much less, killed at all?
3. Why did Q decide to Pulp the first half asynchronically, and then do the second half so straight that it was about as linear a storyline as a ruler from A-B
4. I didn't notice that Gordon Liu was Johnny Mo and Pai Mei until yesterday -- I love Gordon Liu, all the way back from Master Killer
5. The over-acting in this movie is something you love or you won't -- I do, it's so totally marinara, moral, westernish-- pass the parmesan
6. The movie shows 13 deaths, supposedly -- do you remember all 13, I sure don't
7. The soundtrack again is quite excellent and adds to the atmosphere of the movie, like all S/Ts should
8. Would you change your life if you were having a child? Do you have a choice in the matter? If you didn't know you had a child, then found out later, after being your old self for a while, would that make you regret your choices up to your discovery

Oh hell, nevermind -- it's a good conclusion to a very well-paced movie -- I think that by chopping it up, it turns making heads or tails of it difficult because of the urge to compare one to the other -- whereas in fact it is one big story, and the separation into volumes is arbitrary

April 24, 2004

I fell asleep

Actually I realized some things last night, I came to the conclusion that I really really like freestyle music -- the other thing is that I should really read manuals before delving into anything

I was dumbfounded by my new optical drive -- whether it was being read or not, then whether I could use it or not -- then I realized something, it was working and I would have known how to use it properly by reading a page or two in a manual

Anyways, all these shenanigans led to my falling asleep last night at around 8:30PM -- after a tasty G-T dinner for SD's dad -- my exciting life, actually we both were out by 9:30 -- hoo-whee--zzzzz

April 23, 2004

I finally saw it

..what you may ask

The last part of the Matrix -- and it took me a while because I could only watch 10 minute chunks of it before falling asleep -- no joke

At the end of it all, it made me wonder how the hell it all went sour after such a promising beginning to it -- the first movie was really daring and different -- the second was all show, no go -- and the third (better than the 2nd) was just kind of ho-hum

In the end, I came to this conclusion -- there was no payoff, really -- it was "man's" fault to begin with -- and the Neo brokered the peace, which machines of course being thoroughly pragmatic (right???) could accept -- thus it was a big damn BLIP in history -- reminds me kind of Iraq when I think about it

So at the end of the day I can say that I have seen the trilogy -- but expanding beyond movie one in hindsight just kind of confused matters with story arcs that never caught me -- and the same damn kung fu fight -- like 23 times

April 22, 2004

Blah Day

Today was a pretty crappy day -- nothing seemed to go very well at work. My boss cut me down even though I did precisely what he asked me to do -- you know sometimes I wonder about correcting people

I mean, is it worth correcting people who just wouldn't get it -- that is, if you actually took the time to explain it to them.

I have a 2nd interview with #2 next week-- and actually I'm beginning to have second thoughts about it all -- I mean, if a guy who will be my super doesn't click with me, isn't that just asking for trouble -- just thinking aloud

Oh well, almost the weekend

April 21, 2004

Little bit unsettled

I haven't quite decided on what to do after session yet.
It's odd but I feel a bit of pressure, or some internal
feeling to kind of get it into gear and get on with it

No Overtime for You

Me and my pals have been discussing the travails of working in Hawaii and needing two jobs-- and actually working overtime, because we need the money -- well, SL presents for you just another way your Bush administration is looking out for you -- adjusting the labor laws relating to eligibility for overtime

The media have it wrong -- Bush is cutting overtime pay

The Bush Administration has said that only workers earning less than $23,660 a
year would be guaranteed the right to overtime pay. Everybody earning more than that amount could be caught up in several other changes to eligibility rules
that take away overtime pay. For nine months, the Administration has been
fighting tooth and nail to kill legislation approved by both houses of Congress
that would do nothing more than prohibit overtime cuts. The Senate and House already voted once last year to prohibit overtime cuts, but the White House
strong-armed Congress to prevent that overtime protection from becoming law.

Low-income workers

The Bush Administration has been loudly exaggerating the benefits of a helpful
but woefully inadequate change that would expand overtime coverage for some
workers. This group is extremely small because most workers who might be helped don't need the help. They are already guaranteed overtime pay through other criteria, based on their job responsibilities.

Overtime cuts kill jobs

The Bush overtime cuts will hurt the economy. By taking away workers' overtime rights, President Bush is discouraging job creation. He is encouraging
businesses to overwork their existing staff (for no extra pay) rather than hire
new workers. The overtime statute was originally intended to encourage job
creation.

Overtime cuts are pay cuts

The new Bush overtime regulation is a pay cut for American workers. When
workers are stripped of their overtime rights, their employers can now force
them to work overtime for no extra pay. Overtime pay makes up one-fourth of the weekly earnings of workers who earn overtime, an average of $161 per week.

Bush has a credibility gap on overtime.

Over the past year, Administration officials have repeatedly misrepresented
their proposal and its effects on workers. The Department of Labor (DOL)
routinely claimed that only 644,000 people would lose overtime protection, when its own economic analysis concluded that an additional 1.5 to 2.7 million people would be affected. We also know that DOL inflated the number of low-income workers who would benefit, and in fact DOL admits it has no way of knowing how many would benefit, if any.

The BLUR

It's funny but the past two weeks have been a blur

So many things on my plate, it was very hard to focus in or enjoy the days -- it was more like survive them, only to sleep, wake up and go again

It was a bit too high paced for me, today I've had some quiet down time just to relax and think about a few things -- it seems like many others in my life are equally as stressed -- maybe it has something to do with the moon

Well, even it doesn't -- I wish everyone in my life a peaceful day of reflection to find what it is that they enjoy in this life or existence, which ever term you prefer

I've heard it said often this week that the sun comes up again tomorrow, and yes it does for most -- I don't think we should be so cavalier about tomorrows when we can choose to do, be and live today according to how our conscience dictates

So whatever you may be, you are someone to someone else -- a friend, a lover, a parent, a work colleague, a teacher, student, servant ... whatever it is that you are, submit to it so that everything else around it can be made better by your willing participation in enriching our common existence

April 17, 2004

Congratulations

To R and J, really nice wedding you had today -- everything about it was very cool and classy

In many ways it was a "big wedding" done with many personal touches, that felt very real and not at all put on just for show -- I think that the last time I felt that way about a wedding with more than a 100 peeps was when my pal T and B got married

April 16, 2004

Interesting Day

I went to go talk to #2 today and I have mixed feelings about it -- talking to the veep you would think I nailed it, talking to another guy there it was like -- I cannot make heads or tails of what you think about me, and I don't get your line of questions -- so odd

I think the bottom line is I can have it if I want -- at this point I'm not sure, I will spend the weekend soaking it in and maybe come to a decision early next week

SD and I went to the fights tonight -- and the last two fights were really disappointing -- Rich Franklin's opponent just quit fighting -- and I think that it is time for Yamato D to hang it up -- it is not an intelligent defense to have your head absorb ten or twenty straight strikes -- the ref was right in stopping the fight -- and your entourage was disappointing in that they showed very poor sportsmanship after the fight -- and some of the students from GU tried to pick fights in the audience -- overall, I feel very dirty about it -- like I got ripped off and like I was really disappointed by the lack of sportsmanship in the last two fights

April 15, 2004

H3 Excitement

Well, tonight concluded night two of going out -- as we went to SD's good friend's wedding party rehearsal thing

I feel really tired right about now, and it's like not all too late in the evening -- we also have two more nights worth of activities -- I can feel it crushing down on me already -- I think I better sleep early tonight or else the remaining two days are going to be hell

The odd thing tonight was being caught in a full on MONSOON on H3 -- like sheeting rain where you can't even see 20 feet in front of your car -- that was the slowest that I've ever rode on H3 -- and thank God for keeping all of us safe -- that was totally hairy there for a while because halfway down the lights were out and it was pitch black and pouring

I better sleep, I have a job interview tomorrow -- I should at least look remotely fresh -- ha

April 14, 2004

Work Parties

Tonight I went to the annual workplace party -- it's quite interesting to note who actually goes to the event

It would seem that only the wild party crowd tends to go -- and if you know me, like I know you all do -- wild party crowd and me are about the same as UBL and W, in a manner of speaking

It is always interesting to watch people you work with get totally smashed -- it really kind of brings up those quick read advice articles that you really shouldn't overdo it at the company party -- well, hand that memo out again, some people haven't read it

It is not to say that I am a saint -- 6 beers into the night, me and my co-worker left, leaving behind a roaring party that supposedly went on til 2 in the morning -- so I guess I'm getting old and can't stay out late -- and my liver is the size of Cleveland because I had little to no effects -- but partying in the middle of the week is something I can't seem to get into anymore

Feel dumber though, wonder why, ha

Iraq: Out of Control

The violence in Iraq is escalating beyond American control. It's time to recognize that the US needs the world's help to reach the hearts and minds of Iraqis.

It would seem that the US should transfer management authority over Iraq to the United Nations, to enable a real transition to peaceful Iraqi self-rule. Please join me in calling for this change.

60 Americans and reportedly hundreds of Iraqis have been killed in just the past week; 677 Americans have died in Iraq since the war began. A religious leader hostile to the United States now controls two cities, and has sparked uprisings in two others. Dozens of foreigners have been taken hostage.

The growing opposition to American rule among the Iraqi population "probably runs in the tens of thousands", consisting of people who "have jobs in vegetable shops, offices, garages, and schools," according to the New York Times. These people, who should comprise the civil society we're hoping to build there, instead are arming themselves and awaiting the call to attack Americans.

Our troops in Iraq are stretched thin -- U.S. commanders are asking for more troops, and there's talk of a draft, perhaps to be announced just after our November elections.

Instead of simply redoubling our commitment, the US should support our soldiers by taking the bull's-eye off their backs.

As Thomas Friedman put it, "If it is America alone against the Iraqi street, we lose. If it is the world against the Iraqi street, we have a chance."

Join me in calling for a transfer of authority over Iraq to the U.N., at:

Petition for transfer of authority to UN

Thanks.

Be Careful When You Ask

It's really funny this thing called conversating with divine entities

Well, I've been torn lately about what to do post-session this year, so I had a convo with God -- and now it's like offers are snowing in

That's so damn cool, man -- well, to Him, who all praise is due -- thank you. Now, I have the difficulty of choosing among many really great alternatives -- and it's not like I'm severely pressurizing, but it can mean a stable future for me and SD, which I am thankful for as well

Believe it -- now go pray

Late afternoon update:
Phase 2 of Project Make Einstein Do Arithmetic Is Now Complete -- the mods now are the equivalent of driving a Ferrari in first gear and making a genius add 2 plus 2 -- damn, I'm rideekuluss

Congratulations

K and J U-P, may your life together be filled with love and good fortune

Well, today we spent most of the day at my gf's brother's wedding and reception at a Chinese restaurant in Kaimuki

It was pretty nice overall, the food was mostly okay, but it was a nice get together -- and we wish the new family all the best

Tonight we went to see The Girl Next Door, and it's a pretty okay movie -- it's not as bad as some of the critics make it out to be -- well, it's not Oscar material either -- it's a definite rent if you have nothing to do some future weekend, and it's alright as a matinee buy too -- entertaining if you like the Clueless, Orange County, et al type movie

For Passion Long Ago

More Than A Man

Long ago, there was a man who came
Came and died for you
You, you say you don't want to know
But I've got to tell you the truth

God, I will follow you because you died for me
Gave to me your life to set me free
Anyone who asks shall receive
Jesus in your heart
It's time for you to start
Giving God all the glory

More than a man, God almighty
He created you
He's the One, the One who rules the land
He is the One I choose

All of the glory today
No matter what some people say
All of your faith
And your life will start to change

(Lyrics of Stryper - More Than A Man)

Mods Ain't Us

Well, the first phase of the mod the Cube project is underway
I was surprised to get some of the stuff I ordered today
Fedex is pretty darn fast

Anyways, it took me nearly 4 hours to install a fan and set a new processor chip
In the meantime, I had power problems that I fixed
I had contact problems with the new processor that I fixed
I had video card problems too that I fixed

All this for a computer I hardly use -- boy, I sure waste a lot of time
Ah well, phase one is in the books and the computer runs fairly spiffily

She Devil's Corner

Well, it's been awhile-- but today is a good day for a post
SD was passed a NYT review of Eternal Sunshine where she found this quote from (as paraphrased by SL eds.)

They are a perfect couple.
They are profoundly imperfect,
Possessed of a prickly individuality
That leaves them often out of sorts
With the rest of the world

The restless, nonconforming urge,
The true meaning of self-reliance
The only cure is for them
To become more themselves,
Can be accomplished only
In each other's company.

Good stuff.

April 6, 2004

Thanks Peter

You Rule, Peter!

(Click on Catman for his official website)

(Editor's note: There was a time when I was a forever, ready, diehard KISS fan -- I guess when you get older, you become "wiser" or at least less trusting of people's motives (and that my friends sucks ass) -- but it is with this eye that I view that "thing called KISS" nowadays -- and it made me sad, but I can't be taken to the laundry for something I no longer believe in -- thanks, edguy)

Inside is some comments by Peter Criss on the current state of KISS -- and you know what, it's funny but I think it has an odd symmetry and similarity with the Van Halen revolving door and 5 years of nonsense that took none of its fans seriously, and took all of us for granted

From Peter Criss' website:

"Some people love hearing themselves talk, Gene Simmons is one of them. I read online what he said to the Iowa and German press. Now let me tell you what's really important. I have never been so happy in my whole life. I can finally be free to be an artist again.

"I surround myself with people who love me and respect me. My endearing and supporting wife Gigi, true friends, and a loving family, and always God. If not for him there would be nothing. These are things that make me a rich man, Mr. Simmons.

"I sang and drummed my heart out on the AEROSMITH tour, FACT. The really fans know that, END OF STORY. And I also missed Ace on the tour.
"I am in excellent health, wealthy and working on being wiser. I just wanted you fans to know that. I won't even comment on what Mr. Simmons had to say, because it's NOT TRUE, and I don't need to justify his lies.

"The original band is over. And as a founding member I am not shocked at Gene and Paul turning a legendary band into a cover act for just plain profit, How very sad.

"But the crazy thing is? The fans will still follow because they are the real heart of KISS. I was proud to be a part of something that was once great.
"God Bless and good-bye to that part of my life (-signed)."

You got that? THE FANS STILL FOLLOW -- I am totally irked by primadonna and selfish rockstar bullcrap, when in the end the fans get screwed

Some complaints

Well, today I had an asshole want to return something that he paid less than ten bucks for on eBay -- insisting that he doesn't buy anything unless it is new or "near mint" -- and that I should pay him to ship it back to me -- yeah right, so much for 100% feedback for me...

Umm, -- what does USED mean? -- STUPIT HEDD!

Irritation #2
We have a co-worker that just sits at his desk, not knowing how to operate his computer or use the word processor (or even the newsletter maker, publisher) -- well irony of ironies ...

This guy is supposed to be our communications director -- lemme tell you something about "freelance" writers -- in my experience working now with five of them in the span of a year -- there's a perfectly good explanation why they don't have a steady job

THEY AREN'T EVEN COMPETENT TO DO WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO -- yeah go find your calling at Mount Shaolin and leave the rest of us alone already

Oh yeah, and tell me about the "one shining moment" writing sample that he got this job with -- he's never sniffed anywhere near that level of competency -- much less 6th grade level competency of writing -- we think he used someone else's writing sample to get the job -- talk about pathetic, how many "writers" do you know that suck at the simplest word processing

And last but not least, let's talk bosses
Well, let's focus in on those who armchair quarterback AFTER THE FACT
and say lame shit like "We should have been more careful"

Well, jackass, when presented with information a month ago -- YOU MADE A DECISION -- don't make like all the rest of us didn't do our jobs -- it pretty much comes down to the fact that if you fagg-out -- you should accept the fact that you CONTRIBUTED in no small way to how it all turned out -- I really HATE leaders who make like it's not their fault after they decide on a course (and then it goes sour when out of their control)

I'm salty today -- I'm gonna go to CC -- adios for now

Oh yeah and the you heard the rumor first --
The Governor asked the Lieutenant Governor to step down and run for the Mayor's Office -- It has been a well known fact that they have been squabbling now since GO -- and the LG has been asked to step aside because "he dropped the ball, etc." -- Chaos reigns, some change for the good -- PFFTTTTT, our (R) Gov here sucks majorly

Pull up your pants

Well, for me, today the dying fad of hip pants really took a wild left turn

We were at the gym and we saw this girl maybe 18-19 wearing athletic shorts and a tight top

Well, her pants were down to her asscrack -- and we saw the top of her asscrack at least a good five times

So what does she do????

She pulls her shirt down to hide her bellybutton -- yeah, that's life in early 21st century for you -- more ass crack please

April 4, 2004

Minor Discoveries R US

Well, today was a day of fun minor discoveries ...

As you may know, I have been exploring the possibilities of doing a mod project -- like either work to my Solara or to my XBOX/PS2

Well, I have made a decision instead to do mods to my Cube -- yeah, I know, it sounds completely pointless seeing how I hardly use it anymore -- but I found out you can do some cool things to it

It actually reminded me that the Cube was really ahead of its time, that it can be upgraded even today and still be middle of the pack relevant -- what with firewire and main memory cap at 1.5G -- it is unfortunate, it went the way of the Edsel -- but what a sweet Edsel it will be after I am done with it

I should really consider better uses for my money, ha

Well, SD and I went to Ala Moana today -- and the new iPod minis are hella sweet, and mucho tiny -- actually it was fairly productive, SD got some shoes from Macys -- we wandered around abit

We actually saw 4DOW at A/X -- what does the acronym mean, think Thursday -- she's a very beautiful woman -- no slam intended but she is better looking in person

We went walking at the Ala Moana Park walkways -- and I got a cramp from the heat and lack of water -- must remember to stretch and drink fluids -- today was brutally hot out there at 3 in the afternoon

So over and out for the weekend, back to the snoraloo

Just one thought from this week, shouldn't the focus be on JC's teachings rather than the brutality of his death -- relating to the upswing of Xtian spirituality from TPOTC -- think about it, ha

Dust and Cleaning

Today was a spring cleaning day in a big way

Gosh, it always kind of surprises me how much stuff you have
that you have grown unaware you have -- because it's tucked
away somewhere

Only to be discovered YEARS LATER, ha

Well, I think that I shall donate a lot of my pulpy novels to
the library, and maybe sell some of my old textbooks on

We did see TAKING LIVES and it is really not that good --
it's a B-movie with a ton of flaws -- it really is a 50/50
rental as well -- take your chances, but don't pay full
price -- because then it would be TAKING MONEY
