Feel Good

I have very few frequent flier miles -- in fact an infrequent flier like me probably should not belong to a major miles rewards program -- anyone stupid like me and charging 35,000 bucks on a credit to get a free roundtrip -- ok, that's how stupid I am, ha

So what I did was donate my miles to this website (Hero Miles or click on the shield picture above) ... and hopefully my minimal miles can work to get some of our people home from their service to our country -- to do things we all take for granted -- see families, play with their kids, go to the beach, enjoy life

Check it out and donate if you can, I think it's a reasonably good cause -- because yeah, those miles do expire eventually

Or send them a care package:
Any Soldier

At the Luau, we salute our service people, we pray for their safety and safe returns, are are tremendously grateful for their sacrifices for our sake

It's no fun

Well, again here in paradise we are besieged by WET weather -- today is worse than yesterday, because it's sheeting rain, some hail, and the wind is blustery

So at work, it was a melancholy listen to A PERFECT CIRCLE and KILL BILL S/T day -- maybe later I'll post something I wrote up, but for now, just drying off -- and designing my ARK

I wonder what Turkey is like this time of year, ha

Sticks To Your Ribs

Again, the Luau presents quick reviews of some recent CDs that are either noteworthy or notorious --- but certainly not boring -- so on with the show

Iron Maiden - Dance of Death REVIEW: A-

Like an old shirt that is comfortable but the screening is cracking and says ASS of 988 -- you don't want to give it away, but more importantly it brings a sense of comforting comfort -- yeah you know the kind

Something about Maiden albums with the classic lineup of Bruce on the mic and three axes with Nicko -- it's familiar and comforting

This outing is feels more confident than BNW -- it's like IM settled back into a great epic power metal groove -- some things that are interesting are the freewheeling rock of Wildest Dreams that shows that Maiden need not be formulaic to be successful -- not to scare anyone away, but there is plenty of classic power metal goodness like "Rainmaker", the epic majesty of "Montsegur" and "Paschendale", the anthemic gallop of "No More Lies" -- the sleeper track of this collection is "Face in the Sand", with its building of drama and full showcase of Bruce's vox stylings -- there is also some dabbling in the slow medieval balladry elements of BNW-- but again the boys in Maiden have provided the world with its daily recommended allowance of power metal -- at the Luau, we still UP THE IRONS

Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me REVIEW: A

My goodness, what a great month for surprises! Nellie McKay has an eclectic collection of really awesome music -- some have said she's Doris Day meets Eminem -- well, not really...

What you get instead is everything from swinging jazz, to slow burning piano torchsongs, to Tom Tom Club-styled rapping, to surreal dance music ala Supreme Beings of Leisure -- really varied, all very compelling, and again really fantastic, clever lyrics -- and her vocal command is really exceptional-- GIVEN THAT SHE'S ONLY A TEEN-- yikes, look out for this one, she may be a star that burns very long on our horizon

Very highly recommended, some tracks to sample if you don't believe me are: "Manhattan Avenue" and "Sari" -- you won't turn back, but you can thank us later

Probot - Probot REVIEW

Insomnia strikes, so you all get the meanderings of a very tired, underslept humanoid --> moi

Probot - Probot: C+/B-

Dave Grohl, yes you know the one -- ex of Nirvana and frontage for the Foo Fighters -- one of the better drummers in rock today -- that's him -- and this is his tribute to underground metal from 83-90 -- yes I am that old to remember it, and GASP be a fan of it

As much as I tried to love this album, I realize at the end of the day that I only LIKE this album -- this CD has its moments -- the track with Cronos of VENOM leads its off and is a mindcrusher of a rocker, the remaining CD is fairly ordinary -- the track with Lemmy of Motorhead is vintage MH -- and worth more than a few spins -- the tracks with Mike Dean of COC and Snake of Voivod are also mentionable -- but like most tributes to an era, it just fails to capture the precise spirit of it all -- so although it's a good fabrication, it lacks that little push over the cliff -- anyone for 11????

Kerry Did It AGAIN

Ok, I'm no big fan of Democratic presidential frontrunner John Kerry -- in fact, I became to think of him as a total doof after he tried to imitate Howard Dean and be a man of the people -- you know, go out in the community and mingle with the hoi polloi

Well, there were cameras that day in Philadelphia -- and he made a massive goof of trying to order a cheesesteak with Swiss -- ok, for the uninitiated, you can get American, Provolone, or Cheez Whiz on a Philly in Philly -- the mighty soon to be leader of our country can't get a sandwich order right -- how can he lead our country, I thought

Ok, today took the cake, he called my house twice with a PRERECORDED message for the registered Democrat to vote for him -- call me overly sensitive but I'd rather have a spamming campaign vol call me personally for Kerry than to listen to prerecorded tripe -- this guy just doesn't f-n get it

And for all of you shaking your heads at experiencing the same thing, there are other alternatives to receive your vote -- choose or lose -- John Kerry is a doof

KORN - Take a look in the mirror REVIEW

Well, back with some older reviews, we at the Luau present our impressions of the latest from the boys in Korn -- and as is the case with KORN, your mileage may vary

KORN - Take a look in the mirror: B+

After the so-called download debacle that was the mostly underrated and underappreciated "Untouchables", Korn is back with a very surprisingly solid effort

Someday people will look back on this unique period in music and say, yes indeed at this point, in 2004 -- Nu-metal is confirmed as DEAD -- KORN emerges from the shadows of being lumped together with the DOA in this genre with its most coherent, physical, stripped down and straightforward effort that takes core in all new melodic, and dareisayit, LISTENABLE directions

It seems like the releases from the groups once grouped in the NU-MTL category either meander in the same direction or try and put some creative distance in -- on this disc, KORN comes out with some truly outstanding tracks -- the anthemic (and surprisingly catchy), melodic RIGHT NOW -- putting it all together with DID MY TIME (yes, the one off of the Tomb Raider s/t), their most complete track to date -- just beautiful crunch

Top to bottom, this is the most emotionally heavy and physical -- and most coherent of the recent KORN releases -- there really is no asymetrical hard to listen to track -- all have their own neat qualities, so those who typically would say that KORN tracks run all together, the variety here is refreshing -- and the melodies and hooks are nicely put together

It's funny but self-reflection and self-pity still remain themes -- however, they are now wrapped around really great physical music, this CD is not really down the middle of the core movement, but is a really neat piece of creative heavy music from KORN

All in all, a very surprising effort from KORN, they have proven that their music remains vital -- and the rumors of their demise can be deferred for this is a really solid effort -- very enjoyable music for f-d up days

PS. and listen to the backside of the last track for the boys' cover of Metallica's ONE taken from MTV ICON -- cool track

BOWLING FOR SOUP - Drunk Enough to Dance REVIEW

So off I go pronouncing this genre or that as DEAD -- well, pop punk is not long for the earth either, ha

Bowling for Soup: Drunk Enough To Dance: B

Pop-punk -- lemme see, whiny vocals, three chords, and very little differentiation between two minute blasts -- the things that separates the best of the genre such as legendary pioneers ALL and say the latest Blinky clone -- often is vocal melodies and harmony and catchy riffs -- and hella ironic, funny, intelligent lyrics

Well step up to the plate, BOWLING FOR SOUP is here for you -- perhaps you are familiar with the brilliant SUPERHIT single "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" -- these guys capture the fun of the Cars, hit on some retro Beachboys harmonies, with very catchy basic pop power chord melodies from the Weird Al school sans accordion -- almost makes you guilty for liking it TOO MUCH

Highlights include "Emily", the alterna-retro muted chug of "life without Lisa", the almost self-consciously cheesy catchy power ballad "Where to Begin" -- it's like a Bon Jovi outtake (HELLA COOL THO) -- "Self-Centered" has really a cool set of lyrics wrapped in upbeat 80 style stompy punk -- and you simply can't miss "Running from your dad" -- truly excellent song, really funny

If you need to smile or rock a smile on to your mug, this is a CD for you -- and hey, I'm not getting a damn red cent for this recommendation -- hear it soon, believe me later -- lotsa fun, this disc -- big pleasant surprise -- from the land that GREEN DAY forgot

Quick hits

I know that I've been away for a while, here's a quick rundown of some of the CD's I spin for listens, and those that are good for keeping water spots off my teak desk

Quick Reviews:

3 Doors Down - Away from the Sun REVIEW: D

What the hell happened to these guys?!? The sophomore jinx has hit this band in a tragic way -- Gone is the freshness of "The Better Life", in with sappy ballads and very few compelling rockers -- the promise of the debut seems lost on this meandering whinefest -- Highlights are "When I'm Gone" and "Here without You", both are very excellent -- For the rest of the disc, I got this feeling that 3DD got captured by an electric version of Counting Crows-likeness -- blah, what am I not getting?!?!?

Cody Chestnutt - The Headphone Masterpiece REVIEW: A+

This one's a bit on the older side (2002)-- but very high quality -- Cody Chestnutt puts together a sonic MONO, yes MONO tour de force that combines many genres together with simple earnest quality soulful songs -- Contains alternative classics such as "Boylife in America", "Upstarts in a Blowout", our favorite, "My Women, My Guitars", "On a Joyride", "look good in leather", and the awesome "6 seconds" -- just truly awesome song crafting, and some of the freshest, soul/funk songwork on par with the masters like Stevie and Prince -- hopefully he stays on longer than Terence Trent WHO?

Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers REVIEW: A++

This review is such a pleasure to do -- this CD is just full of simply amazing power pop -- "Mexican Wine" just hooks you into a wonderful sonic journey of hooks, melody, and really intelligent (and oftentimes funny) lyrics -- Sometimes you say Beatles, classic smarts of Paul Simon, its Cars-80s or The Attractions style electric power pop, great vocal harmonies -- this CD also features the can't miss goodness of "Stacy's Mom", the best pop song I've heard in a good, long time.

The quality and diversity is obvious on slowed down efforts as "Hackensack" or "All Kinds of Time" -- the diversity of songs combined with catchy melodies, harmonies and great lyrics make it a simple easy joy to listen to -- This one is a can't miss -- our pick for this month and likely will be spun for awhile here

That's all for now, more to come in the next several days

Never Forget - E.O. 9066

Sixty two years ago, one of the "greatest" Presidents of our nation with one stroke of the pen authorized the wartime relocation of Japanese Americans to various internment camps in the United States -- it has been rationalized as protecting AJAs and also to calm the unfounded feelings of the general public that these people with Asian faces were untrustworthy enemies of the state

In this era of Patriot Acts and Guantanamo, it is important to remember that the ENEMY is not just a face, color of skin, an accent, a sexual preference, a religious follower, a national origin, or any other basis for feeling that an American citizen like you or I is the enemy and somehow deserves unequal and unjust treatment because they are different.

One Nation, Very Diverse -- pray for the protection of our troops abroad, the wisdom of our leaders, and a calming of the fears in our hearts

Finally, UPDATED

Okay, so I have finally spent the time to update my site and get it into better shape than it's been since ...

Ok, so it's never been that great, so why are you still coming back to check it out -- huh?!?!?!?!?!

On a more serious note, I do appreciate my visitors to this little corner of cyberville and your comments -- just a few notes to increase your and my communal enjoyment

May I request that you please be respectful -- a small bit of consideration goes miles on this site AND IN LIFE , if you haven't figured that out yet -- it will also give you good karma -- I'm thankful that most of you know how to play well with others -- those that don't, I hold out hope for you -- but don't be surprised if your contribution is removed

Anytime I do a review (or if you notice the side bar of links), these are provided as well as pictures in my review so you can learn more about what I'm yammering on and on about -- and yes, if you buy it, you are supporting the Post 9/11 economic upturn, and the Luau is very thankful for your support of this site (yes, even if you don't buy anything)

Lastly, this site is basically a selfish site for me -- if you agree, cool -- if you don't, peace to you -- the opinions and observations are mine alone, and I encourage everyone to try a blog -- after a year, I still must say that it's a lot of fun -- and has great cathartic value

That being said, welcome back, hopefully we can stay on top of things on my end and keep the luau updated and relevant -- and at least worthy of your time to read my meanderings

This is the 200th entry, so thanks from all of us at the luau

P.S. Goodbye, Mr. Dean, we'll miss ya -- you wild and crazy guy -- YEEEAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Anybody out there

... just nod if you can hear me

Well, after making many lame pronouncements of more production -- guess what? -- HERE'S ANOTHER ... more spew and SOON

ok, so given that my track record has been about as reliable as a watch that is right twice in a day -- things are pretty busy here at ye old Luau

and yes, we are back to being the luau again -- more to come

SOON!, ha

This is embarassing

Ok, by now you have heard the news that A-Rod (THE BEST PLAYER IN THE GAME, no argument here) is the newest member of the Yankees, being traded from Texas for the inconsistent, enigmatic, but supremely talented Alfonso Soriano -- and everyone's favorite term "the player to be named later"

I'm a diehard fan of the interlocking NY -- but even I must say that this is getting pretty ridiculous -- $200M dollar payroll, that should say it all -- actually, the fact that the Yankees have been the highest payroll the past three years (or more?) indicates something to me

Money doesn't win championships -- pitching does

Sure, the Yanks dumped a lot of older pitchers -- but I can't really say that the ones they picked up are a step up or pessimistically are a lateral or side step -- and losing Andy Pettite and Roger probably will negatively affect clubhouse leadership

I'm not a baseball man, only a fan -- but even this fan has to wonder how many games the Bronx Bombers can win 24-23 -- Step aside Murderers Row, this group may set new standards for offensive excellence -- but where's the pitching and D

Happy Birthday SHE DEVIL

I would like to wish a very happy birthday to the most important woman in my life, my girlfriend --- She Devil --- May all your wishes come true on this special day, I love you.

Increase in Concern

I was talking with SD today -- actually we went to go see Tribute and Rememberance: Asian Americans after 9/11 at UH -- Thanks go out to Asian American Federation of New York and the Honolulu Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League for sponsoring the showing.

The movie shows a side of the aftermath of the WTC tragedy that does not involve Iraq, Afghanistan, the Taliban, Osama, or anything else you can learn by watching Fox or any other media outlet -- it informs of how WTC means more than a war against terror, it has reshaped the lives of those that live and work in New York -- it really opened our eyes to how the Asian American, and particularly the South Asian communities were affected -- if you are not familiar with South Asians, I suppose their "Oriental" dress and misidentified "Arab" appearance makes them a target for unfair treatment and violence

I have not been terribly political about being an American of Asian ancestry -- I suppose that I am lucky to have grown up in Hawaii where I was largely sheltered from the discrimination that other Asian Americans experience while growing up on the continent

I do empathize however with movements and attempts to address injustice and inequality-- in our country we have access to civil rights and process under the law, yet so many experience discrimination, injustice, and inequality as a normal part of their American lives because they look differently, speak differently, worship differently, love differently from the majority of people

It has been brought to my attention lately after being dormant for several years -- the issue of civil unions and same sex marriage -- Vermont, Massachusetts, San Francisco, and our federal government have been spinning wheels about this issue -- I frankly do not understand why it is that some members of our community feel a need to DECIDE FOR OTHERS who, what and how people can relate or love one another -- if this is not an issue of tyranny of the majority, I frankly do not know what is

I find this lack of tolerance, lack of respect for basic human dignity, and an individual's pursuit of happiness to be frankly repulsive -- No matter the moral, religious, ethical/legal, or other reasons given for why there can be no gay marriage -- it hardly seems loving or understanding to deny otherwise law abiding citizens the opportunity to pursue their own happiness in a way that does not harm others

Let's be honest, civils unions are a form of "separate but equal" -- therefore, essentially it is denying homosexuals their constitutional right to equal protection of laws related to the rights and privileges that should be protected relating to their choice of relationships

I do not understand why after nearly 2000 years we still cannot love one another and respect the individuality, choices, and liberties of our fellow citizens -- it is not a matter of moral or religious correctness, it is a simple matter of protecting civil liberties and the dignity of individuals -- I remain puzzled as to how it may be that we still will tolerate inequity and injustice perpetrated on a segment of the people of our country

On a separate note, I do not agree with the current administration's positions to wage war on terror in a way that unilaterally excepts itself from abiding by international law intended to promote peace and human rights -- I further do not agree with fiscal policies that put our nation in massive debt (and essentially and implicitly put our national future in the hands of foreign owners that hold the debt) -- I do not agree with attempts to restrict the civil liberties and privacy of individuals as guaranteed by law and our Constitution for the sake of creating a climate of fear -- I do not agree with further attempts to empower the corporations of our country at the expense of our common public national resources

I do not believe necessarily or wholeheartedly that John Kerry or John Edwards provide clear cut best alternatives to our current president -- however, I am willing to support efforts such as Moveon.org and the campaign of John Edwards to restore a positive direction to our country and the common future that we share -- I'm not writing this to urge my readers to do the same -- however, I do make a simple request that everyone register to vote and go out and vote, and importantly inform themselves on the issues that face us today

Whoo, I feel better -- ha
