Juno
SD and I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago. Still must say, the theatres in the 2nd city are remarkably crowded some nights -- makes me wonder if there really is nothing to do at night on the westside of our island. But I digress.
Juno - B
After seeing this movie, I came away with a few impressions. Mostly they were about the critical acclaim of this movie. I think most critics are adding to this movie by installing their own perceptions of what this movie was (or maybe I should say adding things that were not there). To us, the movie was good and solid, not great.
Entertaining. Yes, charming at times. Okay, a bit goofy. Very likable.
But we didn't walk away from it stark raving, proclaiming it the best movie of the year; or engaging in discussions about it; or wanting to see it again immediately; or wanting to own it on (you insert the home video format). It is what it is, a coming of age film. Not only of the teenage star of the movie or her best friend. But of some Gen-X good looking, rich 30-somethings as well.
Even though the performances were very good, the movie was still a very simple plot. Teenage pregnancy, what to do, choose what to do, have misgivings, carry through on what to do -- and giggle along the way, and maybe see some of yourself in certain characters. If the performances were not as good, it would be easy to discount this movie as some kind of lower grade, off beat indie film in the vein or flavor of Nap-Dy.
There were times when you just went, okay that was a bit too smart for anyone to say, much less a teenager, much less a middle aged woman. But, they happen so infrequently, they are rather unnoticeable and for the most part, one can't help but to ride along with the pleasant vibe of the film.
And at the end of the day, that is what we thought it was. A sweet film, in many ways. Very pleasant. Didn't leave us wanting to see it 3x+ like some critics. The lead actress (EllenPage) is likely one to watch in the future. Her best friend (MichaelCera) is a modern master of understated, straight man dead pan (plays the same as in Superbad). The supporting roles are solid.
It is a good movie. Rather than recommend it, we would say that if you are interested in seeing it, you probably would enjoy it. Go see it if you wanted to.
