I have seen the documentary GP, meant to see it in the theatres but never got around to it, due to a very short run here
It is a documentary that follows a group of US soldiers around in Iraq and basically is not judgmental about their lives or situations. It basically lets them tell their own stories through their words, and watches them as they work and play.
I thought the film was effective in conveying the human face of the war. Our soldiers have faces, lives, opinions, etc. It is easy to be desensitized with casualty numbers each day, and not seeing or hearing from the boots on the ground in the media
It did scrub injuries and carnage, and did not do too much with putting a face on Iraqis other than those assisting US soldiers, trying to be soldiers for their own national security force, and showing some kids from time to time. But, I don't think that was the focus of the film, so it would be hard to critique it on that basis ... it's like saying a hot dog is not pizza, um yeah and ...
If I had to pinpoint the agenda of the filmmaker, it would be along the lines of support the troops and do not forget that there are human faces and lives that fight even though the politicians, media, and pundits talk in grand and unrealistic, idealistic terms ... those concepts and ideas are not even close to the reality of the foot soldier
I believe it was towards the end of the film where a soldier was quoted to the effect that he was more concerned each day about surviving than bringing democracy to Iraq. That's more honesty about this war than I've heard in 2+ years from conventional sources.
