Coldplay - X & Y REVIEW
I cannot think of a more controversial band to like/dislike in the past three or so years than Coldplay. They certainly have a dedicated and loyal base of fanatics, and they have an equally loud group of contrarians that declare them the most overblown piece of crap since well, crap was overblown
I have listened to the album over and over ... is it a wonder that I am sane anymore? kidding. Well smack dab in the promo week for this album weekend, here are my impressions of the new one from CP
Coldplay - X & Y REVIEW: B
I suppose this is the band that has the most for everyone to love and hate. There are those that hate them, if I may summarize because they exemplify way too obvious, whiny, self absorbed low powered jacking off -- there are some that love them because their music is pleasant to listen to and really personal/emotional ... like if you were breaking up with someone, hey this could be your S/T for the months until you decide to get back to living
I suppose that I have been one of those who is in the middle about CP ... I have liked some of their songs well enough, but I don't really get them ... in the ooh, I get it sense. I just have found that I like single tracks from them well enough
In the final analysis, I find that once again, I like a few tracks well enough, but certainly not enough to call myself a fan, fanatic, or be one who declares them the new saviors of music
This album I think really exemplifies what I have read in promo interview clips from the band about the new album -- it really, freely takes from other more notable bands ... to list them would be pointless, but suffice it to say, they have fairly freely cribbed from others ... Think "October", and you will be warm LOL
The notable songs on this one ... "Fix You" and "What If" has all the stuff I really love from them, and their stuff like "Yellow" ... "Speed of Sound" is a bit too much like "Clocks", and is that overblown stuff that even I have problems with
I found "Square One" and "White Shadows" to be intriguing in that it was straight forward, hook-laden alt-rock (yes, with guitar), and not so much low powered indulgence ... I think that if they are to keep it interesting, they should go in this direction
Let it not be said that this album is not solid and listenable, because it certainly is that ... there are songs where I wished they would get to the point and stop meandering ... there are songs where I wished they would push more in that direction. In more ways than not, it's good enough but not great ... and I suppose that will frustrate some long time hardcore CP fans
I give it a recommendation of YMMV ... our grade: B
