The Killers - Hot Fuss REVIEW
SL Artist of the Year and Co-Best Album of the Year
Now I don't know why I have decided to conclude my music year this year prior the beginning of summer. It makes as much sense as the fiscal year ending in the middle of the year
Well, using the twisted logic of always having countdowns over Memorial Day weekend, I have two albums of the year to present this year ... and both of them fit nicely in my SL album hall of fame
And don't ask why it took me nearly a year to review this one ...
The Killers - Hot Fuss REVIEW: A++
It never would have occurred to me that nearly a year after first hearing, "Somebody Told Me", that I would be pronouncing The Killers as my selection for SL Artist of the Year ... and the co-SL Best Album of the Year for musical year 2004-05.
It started to snowball after I heard "Smile Like You Mean It", the brilliant extension of the 80s new wave/post punk movement ... then listening to Virgin Radio UK, I heard "Change Your Mind", and I've been sold ever since.
Hot Fuss is one of those less than a handful of albums in a given year that stays with you. It legitimately has six signature hit songs, and is positively loaded with good music top to bottom
Their style is one that those whose formative years were in the 80s or fans of late 80s/early 90s college radio will find very familiar and comfortable, yet expansive on these themes. I realize that there are many out there that would poo poo anything that is remotely derivative or showing their influences so proudly.
The thing I dig about The Killers is their confidence in their sound, and their ability to write compelling, utterly listenable songs. Their songs are topical and now dumbed down, even though they may be highly accessible.
I suppose that what I am saying is that, many will and have missed the train on this one because of being snotty ... well from the looks of iT and Ascrob/Last, some of these people are slowly discovering the goodness of this band, and are being led down the same road to musical enjoyment that I have been on for the past year
A definite add to any best of the 2000s list even though the decade is not half over, highly recommended ... A++
