That music will cost you ...

YOUR LIFE SAVINGS ... and you thought 18.99 was steep

Does that sound improbable? ... not to Jesse Jordan

This past April, the RIAA sued a college freshman for copyright piracy over his creation of a search engine type program that tapped into his college's network (which has a file sharing capability like most networks do) ... oh and some of the computers on the network had music files

This is very unfortunate because it's not like search engines tell you what to search for --- moreover networks don't tell you what files to share ... it's hard to imagine how a search engine encourages or promotes piracy of copyrighted music by itself ... its hard to call it with a straight face: "hijacking an academic network or setting up a musical emporium for trading"

That's like suing Black n Decker for making a hammer that was used in a murder in Thailand --- yes hammers can kill, but that's not their primary purpose

I don't get it ... but the teen had to give up $12000 as a settlement to forgo this lawsuit ... that's his lifesavings

In trade for this bank account hijack, the RIAA let Jesse deny all of their claims against him and won't pursue further action

Translated to English for the nonlegalese:
Jesse, you didn't do anything wrong, and umm, thanks for the 12,000 dollars

Right now at Chewplastic.com there is a donation fund being raised to restore his life savings if you are interested

Another young creative tech mind stifled ... that's your happy story for Monday

Life Savings for "File Sharing"

Comments

I think its really just to squelch innovators from developing tech to "rip-off" the RIAA by sharing

That is until the RIAA finds a tech that is RIAA-friendly ... they'll keep sitting on innovators in order to promote a chilling effect on any application that could POTENTIALLY be used for sharing commercial music media

ummm...

thats just wrong. if he was really guilty im sure that the RIAA would have wanted more than that. How would the prove the damages done by using this system?? its just bizarre. Did this kid have an attourney???
