Malibu's Most Wanted - REVIEW
I seriously think I saw the most stupid movie of the year with SheDev yesterday.... yet in its surface stupidity, there is much to say, and much stuff to think about ... so in my thoughtlessness, we at the Luau bring you our review of:
MALIBU's MOST WANTED: B+
I laughed, she laughed ... and the 11 year olds next to us in the PACKED Windward Mall theatre #5 didn't shut up for the entire movie
This movie is really something. It almost works point counterpoint with the recent BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE ... or actually it fleshes out what people think about the stereotypes in both movies, but MMW actually decides to do something with them and out comes some really nice satire
The core of the movie like so many lately is: Race Role Reversal but this one feels a lot more fresh ... Jamie Kennedy (late of Scream) is so damn stupid in this movie its funny but why is he funny?
Actually, there's nothing funny about a white privileged suburbian dude pretending to be a from the streets, hard thug rapper ... its quite lame when I think about the concept in the abstract sense... actually its mostly SAD in the abstract ...but in this movie
FUNNIER THAN FUNNY LOOKING POO!!!
Jamie K. actually becomes a totally believable lame white suburbanite gangsta ... sincere, deluded, beautifully lame and stupid ... the character is named B-Rad ... yeah, that stands for Brad for all of you easily stumped by codenames... ha
I think if you read other reviews they give away some of the jokes ...but the concept is that Malibu is damn hard living ... in the Stevie Wonder Livin for the City sense ... in the NWA Straight Outta Compton sense ... and he and his homies thug it at the mall
At the base of the story, a ransom kidnapping gone awry ... a run for political office derailed ... two goofball kidnappers that can't get sh-- straight ... and a boy with a confused identity much more profound than Boys Don't Cry or Crying Game
Basically B-Rad gets kidnapped so that he can be turned back to a harmless Opie Cunningham so that his dad can become Cali governor .. great premise, huh?!?!?!?!?!
The kidnappers help make the show as they are people much like the hoopsters in a recent Sprite commercial ---classically trained actors who are posing as gangsters ... their interactions with each other and their evaluations of their portrayals is hilarious
And yes there is a big SWING at 8 mile in this movie ... makes you wonder whether Shady had a chance to win over the crowd in his movie ... or whether that was just PLOT! ... ha
There's some cheapshots here and there ... but that is a symptom of the joke a minute genre
Is it a movie about acceptance? You tell me ...in the mean time, enjoy yourself while seeing it ... but unlike the end of 8 Mile ... It is NOT OK to start representing as if you could freestyle in the parking lot after the movie
It is a movie afterall... and just seeing it won't make you able to rap the lines from Blondie's Rapture ... so leave it alone
Comments
are you sure you aren't overintellectualizing it a bit? because if i go see this based on your recommendation and it's as stupid as i fear, i'm going to make you personally refund my ticket price.
